Drama Evening-20/07/15

Lesson 5+6
First of all I patched the lights in the drama studio, I then tested all of them by standing in the dance studio and Scott pressed the buttons and I shouted to him if they turned on or not.

Then I set up a new show on Chamsys, I recorded 2 blue lights into the programme to use for later. Then I just set the different lights for people to focus, so I'd type the number of the dimmer and then the intensity in the format of - dimmer @ intensity. I also learnt how to set 2 lights at the same intensity simultaneously- dimmer 1 + dimmer 2 @ intensity.

Chamsys

Then I focused a light, I put on some gloves so I didn't burn my hands then with the light on got Beth to be the 'actor'. I then climbed the ladder with Olly spotting me and moved the light across so it was more centre stage, then I also moved it up so there was more coverage over Beth and the back wall. Then I helped Mr Hancock focus another red light, he showed me how to move the bulb to allow a difference in coverage.

The Performance
Before the rehearsal with Mr Hancock's help I programmed the lights, we only needed 4 so we assigned to 4 different faders, there was 1- Blue dimmers, 2-Red dimmer, 3- General wash, 4- Flashing random lights. For the flashing light we just selected all the dimmers and then programmed a 1 second alteration on them. In the format (dimmer @ intensity) I programmed the lights by pressing record once I programmed the lights, then I would assign it to a fader, then I would clear the programme to programme the next one.

Mr Hancock also cued up the audio, which I reordered, however when Mr Hancock left before the  performance we didn't have some of the audio for other performance. We had to cue it up on Youtube, however as I don't have access to Youtube on my account, Mrs Nixon Young had to open all the tabs and I had to manually play them, fade and stop them in Youtube. This was made harder as I didn't have a full script for any of the performances so I had to rely on Mrs Nixon-Young to tell me when to stop and start the music. When operating the audio I had to press the number key that corresponds to the cue needed then I just pressed the fade button to fade the music out and 'esc' to stop it.

Bugsy Malone-15/07/15-FINAL CONCLUSION

ROLES WITHIN BUGSY

-Projection design
-Projection operation
-Lighting design
-Lighting operation (Shadowing this role)
-Properties designer/making
-Set painter
-Make up

Projection Design

My role within Bugsy Malone was to design the projections. I first started out by marking projections that were needed in the script then marked out a final projection list.

From this on Photoshop I created each projection, with firstly using mock ups of projections in certain styles.
Mock Ups

Then in the Tech runs for Bugsy on the script I marked each cue and what the projection was that was needed, from this I then wrote down a final order list of what projections were needed and re ordered the cue stack with Joe at the end of the rehearsal.
Re ordering projections

Then after we reordered the projections I resized all of them to their right proportions as when we created the final cue stack the projections were all the file sizes not the right size for the stage.
Resizing

However the next day in the dress rehearsal I realised the resizing had not saved properly and would have to be done again after the dress rehearsal. It turns out that the output button had been on when I'd been resizing them so it hadn't formatted them and saved them in the cue stack. Hence when I resized them again I ensured the output button was not pressed.

The noise on the projector had been a problem since we first trialled the projections, this problem was never fixed as the most successful way of stopping it was to have a centralised power system in the hall as the resistance and wiring led to the noise on the projector being a problem.
Noise on the projection

Another problem we had was that after adding the newspaper reeling effect the projections had a transition effect on them like a PowerPoint presentation, this problem was never solved completely as it only started happening on the dress rehearsal and the cue stack would have to be re done to stop it happening, so instead Mr Hancock told Joe to just bring the fader up slightly on each projection to allow the projection to do the animation to then be still for when the fader is brought all the way up on cue.

Projection Operator

In the second dress rehearsal Joe wasn't there for a bit so I operated the projections, I also operated them to make sure they were all the right size in the right order. I just pressed the play button on the cue stack every time there was a new cue.
I knew how to use the programme as |Mr Hancock taught me in one my study periods a few weeks ago. The problem with the programme was that it only read Jpegs which meant if I had a transparent background it couldn't be as Jpegs make transparent backgrounds white, hence I made the backgrounds black as the projector struggled projecting black.

Lighting Design

Maddie left for a few hours in the tech rehearsal hence I programmed and designed some of the lighting states in the end of the first act. I learnt this skill by just observing how Maddie had done this earlier in the day. I just programmed different lights and different intensities to create the state, so you type into the programme " Light number @ intensity (%)". By experimenting with the lighting we got the perfected environment for the scene.

When Maddie was there too I was contributing to the design of the lighting, suggesting for example when Blousey sings to dim the Fat Sam's state and then focus a brighter light on the stage block were Blousey sings.

Lighting Operator

This was the role I was shadowing and I realised I would love to apply for this role in Starlight Express. When Maddie left I was in charge in the second dress rehearsal to operate the cue stack, by watching Maddie I knew how to do this and I really enjoyed it. I also in the tech rehearsal noted down lighting and projection cues and when they were and what number there were, which then I cross referenced with Anna to make sure we all had the right information. I then followed this script in the show to keep track of the cues and Maddie copied up my lighting cues into her script for her to follow.

LX notes and annotated with cues script

We discovered that having a lighting assistant is useful for writing and following cues and to help programme and be support for the main operator and me and Maddie would both like to see this continue in Starlight express.

Properties Making and Designer

Once I'd finished my projections I helped Olly with his workload by first making the newspaper, I printed off the 2 newspaper pages I made for the projection and blew these up to A3, then with double sided tape I joined the 2 pages together, then I placed a teaching newspaper within the two pieces so then when I taped the seam all together it created a newspaper.

I also took the picture and Photoshopped the Dandy Dan cut out image. Then I gave this to Mr Hancock to get printed.

When the silly string cans were used in the fight I gaffer taped the cans to make them look black, as I was more durable and quicker than painting them, this allowed them to be used straight away for the dress rehearsal.

Set Painting

I painted all the flats with the white render and brick work with the help of Beth, Corben, Sophie and Lauren. We used a projection to trace on the first quarter then the rest of it we did free hand when we got the hang of it. We added a small amount of our grey mix to the white to make the render not optic white.

Then after the first performance we helped Scott paint the steps a grey/black as the steps were't painted before and were unfinished.

Makeup and Hair

In the dress rehearsal they didn't have any makeup so I just slicked the boy's hair. I found that the VO5 gel was not strong enough for the boy's hair that was thick, so instead I found the essential Boots gel was more effective.
I did mostly the boy's makeup, I added a base colour, eyeliner, blusher and setting powder, for boys with lighter eyebrows I used the eyeliner on their eyebrows, and some boys with pale lips I added some red lipstick.

Setting powder

One of the boys had really dark skin so I found him a dark liquid foundation so consequently had to use a dark powder too to avoid any shining.

I found one of the brushes I was using for the powder the bristles were just falling off on his face so I had to the throw the brush away and brush his face off with another brush.

I did some of the girls makeup, we tried a red lipstick on one of them and it was quite old and went all clumpy so we had to remove it and use a pink newer one instead.

I also did 'Lena's' makeup, I used a toned purple eye shadow on her to give her eyes some more pop as she was a more major role who was very over the top.

Bugsy Malone-13/07/15- Get Out

We did the Bugsy Malone get out today, my job was to help clear the gym by helping order and clear up the costumes. First of all we cleared a rail and placed the schools costumes one end and Mrs Elward's costumes on the other (ready to make note of) and then ones that needed cleaning were placed in the middle. Then in black bags I counted and labelled the hats, braces, ties, fringe dresses, table cloths and feather boas, as well as documenting and counting the boys trousers. Then we moved this over to store in DS2.

Bugsy Malone-10/07/15- Dress Rehersal and Performance

Dress Rehearsal:
I made a few notes in the dress rehearsal that we then tried to solve in the second run, these were-
-Most of the projections were out of line with the central line (Mr Hancock realigned the projector to centre all of them as it must of been jogged).
-We also noted for all Fat Sam's lighting state that the backdrop needed to be lowered or taken out to see the projections (this was reprogrammed for the performance).
-Mrs dLG after the dress said all the New York projections were too invasive so we only have the 1st one.

Performance:
I noticed in the performance the projections were doing a weird transition animation that made it look like it was done in Powerpoint. I have talked to Joe and hopefully it will be changed, I'll check this in my double lesson later. I will also talk to Joe about making sure he's proactive with following his script and anticipating cues as the projections should be simultaneous with the lighting cues and consistently the projections are a good 20 seconds or minutes after when the cue should be. At LX5 is when the Book Emporium projection should come up but it came up too early in Bugsy 's monologue yesterday so I'll talk to Anna about this today.

Bugsy Malone-08/07/15- Act 2 Tech Rehearsal

Again I helped programme some of the lighting cues, as well as this all through act 2  I made notes of the lighting and projection cues. It turned out the resized projections hadn't saved form yesterday so once I ordered all the act 2 projections from my cues, I resized every projection.

Bugsy Malone-07/07/15- All day rehearsal

First of all I made the newspaper prop by printing off the double newspaper both halves in A3 then double sided taped them to make a seam, then on top of that layer I taped on an actual newspaper insert to give it some weight.

Tech Rehearsal: As Maddie operated lighting I made notes on the script of lighting and projection cues. I then corresponded with Anna (DSM) to see if our cues matched up. I also was operating the projections at the same time, however they were in the wrong order (I corrected this once we'd finished the cues). Maddie had to leave so as well as writing cues I was operating the lighting. And also helped Mr Hancock programme new states for the rest of act one when Maddie left and design them (the intensity and what lights). Then at the end of the rehearsal I resized all the act one projections and made sure the order was done so they're ready for the show.

Bugsy Malone-06/07/15- Lunch and Rehearsal 1:45-6pm

Lunch:
Ready for the afternoon rehearsal we quickly whitewashed the unpainted flats with some mixed grey and white paint.

Rehearsal:
First of all I took photographs of the 2 gangster boys and Photoshopped them like my trial one. Then I added these into my remade newspaper from yesterday.
One of the gangster pictures
I also made a full page spread to give to Ollie for his newspaper prop so he can print it off.
Full page spread
For the Dandy Dan cut out I took the picture and Photoshopped out the background ready to be printed.

Then me and Mr Hancock played around with the projections and came across these comments:
-Dock 17 should be greyscale as it will blend better (Done)
-Emboss the Lord Will Provide To Stand Out (Done)
-On Air looks better when Posterised on Chamsys
-Rolling newspaper effect on the single front page on Chamsys makes it look like it's printed and it's effective
-Fat Sam's has more glare on the gold effect so looks really effective
-Black backgrounds like on the book emporium blend so well and are really effective
-Sluggers Gym looks good if positioned further down with some of the upper brick appearing in the corner to give it texture
-Audition sign needs more outer glow to show up (Done)

Bugsy Malone-05/07/15- Weekend

I completed the last newspaper projection, all I have to do tomorrow now is take the pictures of the kids and Photoshop them with the notes I made. To make the projection I just Photoshopped out the background of the New York Times logo and placed it on the projection I started the other day. Then I added text to the lines which I interpreted from pictures of New York Time's other issues. The text in the newspaper is a website's text about 1920s mobsters so it's contextual. Then finally I photoshopped a Gillette ad from 1920 to use in the top corner.

Bugsy Malone-03/07/15-Before school, Study Lesson 1+2, Lessons 5+6

Before School: Ready for my pictures for the newspaper Monday I chose a random picture and noted what effects I'd used to achieve a vintage picture use on a modern day picture.

Lesson 1:
First of all for Mr Hancock I filmed some lighting to show Mrs de Lancy Green for when people get splurged, this also allowed me to fade the lights in and out. I suggested to Mrs de Lancy Green that the pulsing lighting should be used for the New York streets to look like cars.
Still lighting stake for splurge

Lesson 1 ,2, 5, 6:
I helped Scott to pain the flats, we started by projecting the brick render pattern on a 1/4 of the flats and with sharpie traced round them to then fill the bricks with a dark grey and to the white render we added some grey paint to dull down the optic white. Then with a thin paintbrush and black paint we painted on the brick outline.

After school we'd managed to paint the top white screen for the projections and most of the flats brickwork, by the end we didn't project the brickwork as we'd learnt to do it freehand.
