Bugsy Malone-30/06/15-Lessons 5+6

Lesson 5:
Model Box
I worked on completing the model box, I made the new stage blocks that are bringing the stage out another metre and painted them black. I also painted the legs white of my other stage blocks.
Cutting the dowel for the legs of my 6 new stage blocks.
Lesson 6:
Testing the projections
With Mr Hancock we tested the projections in the hall. As the flats aren't painted yet it was only rough but it gave us an idea of what worked and didn't. First of all when converting a Photoshop file if the image has no background it automatically makes it white, we realised this looked bad so decided to change the non background images background colour to black so it blends. However the other projections worked really well.
With the white background.
With black or coloured backgrounds
Secondly we realised that the projection softens out the image too much so any gold effect type (for book emporium and auctions) just looks like block colour so I'm going to try and brighten the colour of the original font then make it golden and see if that helps the definition when projected.

Lesson 3:
Barber Sign
I created the stripes on Illustrator then saved them and imported them as smart objects onto a blank page in Photoshop.
Then I used the font I sourced yesterday and placed it on top. I also added a black boarder to help blend the projection.
The sign needed some texture to age it so again I lowered the fill and transparency of the rust and layered it on top.
Again once black and white it looses it's effect, so on Thursday I'm going to talk to Mr Hawkins about keeping them in colour.
Restaurant Sign
I first of all started to reorganise the mock up restaurant sign. Then I tired just the flag as the background and it was really effective. The font for the sign I used the barbers one again as it looked better than the one we original designated- Sanitero.
Start of reorganisation

I only had the pasta sign so I decided to add a gelato to it as well. I tried using the magic wand tool to separate the ice cream but it also took away the cracks in the cone so I just used the eraser tool.

Lesson 4:
Laundry Sign
Used inspiration from a Chinese laundry sign I found on Google Images.
Made a block background on Photoshop then used a font I sourced to write the text (as dictated by the script).
I then added a red boarder to make it look like more of a sign. I also Google Translated the word 'laundry' and copied it into the text underneath the english for laundry. I also layered the rust ontop to add texture again and lowered the fill and transparency.
On Air Sign
On Youtube I watched a tutorial on how to give font a neon look, I watched it on my phone and directly followed the steps on my laptop on Photoshop producing the sign.

Auditions Sign
Then using bevel and emboss in Photoshop on a font I previously sourced I created the audition sign.

Bugsy Malone-29/06/15-Lessons 5+6

Lesson 5:
First of all I sourced the cursive font for The Lord Will Provide sign (Freebooter Font) from an online website, however I found the font was even thinner than the original one. Then I tried using a thicker font called Candy Inc that I also found online, however this one looked too modern and not biblical or cursive enough. Mrs de Lancy Green liked the original font.
Freebooter Font

Lesson 6:
I continued searching for fonts that I needed for the rest of the signs on the internet. I marked out what signs still needed fonts on my final projection sheet with an orange pen. First of all I found a new more rugged textured font for Dock 17, which Mrs de Lancy Green had seen and didn't like the original one.
Orignal Dock 17
Final Dock 17
Then I starting creating the Book Emporium sign by using a box with a fill and added boarder on Illustrator and then copying it as a smart object into Photoshop.
Then I inputted the text straight from the wording of the script, then I made the font colour yellow/burnt orange and embossed it on effects to create a gold plated look.
'Book Emporium' is gold plated
Once the gold plating was finished it was clear the sign needed more texture, so I layered the rust picture on top of the sign and lowered the fill and transparency of it. Then I made it greyscale for the final projection.

Bugsy Malone-26/06/15-Lesson 5+6

Lesson 5:
Practical Lesson
First of all we took removed the clutter from the stage such as the drum kit. Then we moved the tables and chairs off the stage blocks. We made 4 stage blocks (one was already made up on stage). First of all we used the H frames (that are 75cm), they're being used for the bar, we found that a year 7 would be too short to use it, so we took the 75cm legs off the 2 blocks and replaced them with 50cm legs which were a more suitable height. We also realised the blocks can be further back as they do not stretch as far as we thought they would.

Lesson 6:
At the start of the lesson I gave Joe a memory stick with the projections I'd already done (New York skyline, Dandy Dan's, Dock 17), so he can start playing around with the sizing and programming in the box.
The box
Then I printed out the fonts that I had written the actual words in, and also added the 'Broadway' style  font. On my final projection sheet I also started marking in red the projections I'd done. I started to make 'THE LORD WILL PROVIDE' sign, however the only cursive font I had was too thin, so I'm going to source a new font after school and use this Monday.

Bugsy Malone-26/06/15-Study Period 1+2

Lesson 1:
In this lesson I annotated my original list of projections in accordance to my meeting the other day with Mr Hawkins and Mrs de Lancy Green. I highlighted the projections that were needed and colour coordinated them.
Orignial projection table, the final projections needed are highlighted
From this table I then produced a final projection sheet, showing what projections are text, change of location or a sign.
Final projection list
From this list I then sourced pictures from Google images that I can layer and use for the projections.

Lesson 2:
Created the sign for Dandy Dan's place on Photoshop by layering marble textures and creating 3D effects on Photoshop. I also created a whole projections folder to put the finished pieces.
Dandy Dan's House Plaque
I also did the Dock 17 sign (I still need to mess around with the positioning and the transparency) . However I didn't know wether Mr Hawkins and Mrs de Lancy Green what all the signs in greyscale like the change of location, so I will ask them Monday. I made them greyscale anyway in a second copy. However on Photoshop when you make an image greyscale you have to merge all layers so you can't easily go back and make changes to the image.

Bugsy Malone-25/06/15-After School

I found the broadway font for the audition sign.

I also wrote out the other fonts with their names in the script ready to use in the projections. I'll print them out later.

Bugsy Malone-25/06/15-Study Period Lesson 6

Lesson 6:
First of all I connected the larger splat so that I can use it as a template to base my projections around.
I also realised that all projections need a black base background so they blend well enough with the lighting. Towards the end of the of the lesson I went into the hall to have a rough play around with the mock ups to get an idea of sizing with Mr Hancock. We realised that the projections need to be taller when there's a change of location and smaller when there's sign, so the signs don't become disproportionate.

Bugsy Malone-25/06/15-Lesson 1+2

Lesson 1:
Animating on Adobe Edge Animate
In the first lesson I watched a Youtube tutorial on how to use the basics of Edge Animate, I also used the tips tool bar on the side of the programme. I just experimented with the programme and got to grips with it. I learnt that the programme can't import Photoshop or Illustrator files only Jpegs so I'll have to convert all the images I use.
Adobe Edge Animate
Cut Out Trees
I started mocking up Charlie and Lola style trees for the cut outs.

Lesson 2:
Mrs de Lancy Green and Mr Hawkins agreed to cut the cut out trees, so I didn't do anymore. We discussed this and more in our production meeting during lesson 2.
Meeting
I showed them both my mock ups and font ideas. They decided that I should type up in the fonts I'm using the names, and that I should find a broadway lights style font. We also decided that there are only 2 or 3 change of locations with font, the rest are signs.

Bugsy Malone-22/06/15-Lesson 5+6

Lesson 5:
At the start of the lesson I printed off my font samples and mock ups with an area for Mr Hawkins to comment on, and as he was on a course left the sheets on his desk.

The Projection Splat
To design the shape of the projection (so there will be no bleeds onto the bricks), I needed to first measure the flats where the projection will be to get a proportion for my design.
The brown and white squares on the back flats are where the projections and splat will be.

The area for the projection needs to be high up as shadows will be created by people on stage if too far down.
Shadows are created even when people are at the back of the stage.
Once I measured the flats I x100 the 2.04 x 1.3m measurement, to get a millimetre measurement on Illustrator to start designing.

Lesson 6:
I first drew a rectangle 204 x 130mm in Illustrator and made small splat shapes around it with the curvature tool.
However once I built up more individual shapes around the square it didn't look like a splat, it just looked like a doodle. However I did print it off and left it for Mr Hawkins to compare to the larger splat.
Then I started to create a larger splat, with less individual pieces. It consisted of 2 shapes just flipped and resized. This larger splat looks more realistic and will be easier to paint.
